www.baypath.edu Congratulations to our Retirees! Wishing well to four members of the Bay Path community. Dr. Ed Bernstine Professor of Biology Dr. Bernstine started with Bay Path as an adjunct faculty member and was hired as Professor of Biology in August 2006. He was our expert in biochemistry and genetics research, with a wealth of experience in the biopharmaceutical industry and experience with the Massachusetts State Crime Lab. During his years with the University, Ed taught biochemistry, cell molecular biology, biotechnology, genetics, criminalistics, crime scene investigation, history and philosophy of science— and he didn't stop there. He was co-director of the Faculty- Student Forum with Dave Wallace and founder of the BioMedical Research Award, presenting $500 to a student participating in research. We wish Ed the best! Kathleen Staron Technical Services Librarian Kathleen joined the Hatch Library staff as Technical Services Librarian in 1993. Kathleen just missed the Hatch renovation project this past summer, though she was here for the previous renovation in the late 1990s. Kathleen's thoughtful mentoring not only of colleagues who came and went during the course of her 22 years, but also of a whole generation of Bay Path undergraduate student assistants she trained, supervised, and graduated, immeasurably enriched by their contact with her, will have a lasting legacy at the University. Robert Wakem Custodian In his role as custodian and "chief handy man," Bob worked second shift primarily in Carr Hall, and always had a smile on his face. Bob enjoyed his work, and he particularly enjoyed befriending staff, faculty and students. Sometimes, Bob would be seen with his wife, Donna, enjoying lunch or dinner in Blake Dining Commons because they were so fond of Bay Path. They recently renewed their vows as they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Wishing Bob a wonderful retirement— we know he'll be spending quality time indulging in his favorite hobby, fishing. Barbara Kochon Executive Assistant to the President Barbara – or BK, as she was fondly known – was (and always will be) a special part of Bay Path. Genuinely committed to the campus community, Barbara kept an "open door" and welcomed all to the President's office. During her decade-long tenure at Bay Path, Barbara was a wonderful mentor, guiding the office staff and students to be their very best. She loved being a part of Bay Path and was almost always the first to arrive on campus each morning and the last to leave in the evening. She was instrumental in starting the recycling program for the University and the four-day summer work week. Barbara will be remembered warmly by all that were fortunate to work with her over the years. MS in Genetic Counseling Program Welcomes New Program Director Nancy Steinberg Warren, MS, CGC, has joined the Bay Path faculty as the program director for the MS in Genetic Counseling, one of three accredited programs in New England. As a profession, genetic counseling is the process of helping people understand and adapt to the medical, psychological and familial implications of genetic contributions to disease. Warren comes to Bay Path with over 30 years of experience in genetic counseling. Her primary expertise has been in education and training of students, health care professionals and the public. She developed and directed the genetic counseling graduate program at the University of Cincinnati, where she was recognized with a faculty teaching award by the University. She has also held many leadership roles in genetic counseling, including serving on the board of the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) and the American Board of Genetic Counseling. Warren is credited with the development of a web-based cultural and linguistic competency toolkit for the genetic counseling profession and an online case module series approved for continuing education, the Genetic Counseling Cultural Competence Toolkit, available at geneticcounseling- tookit.com. In 2013, she was further recognized as a thought leader in this area as the recipient of the first NSGC Cultural Competency Award. She holds a BS in Biology from the State University of NY at Stony Brook, and an MS in Human Genetics, from Sarah Lawrence College.
