Bay Pathway Winter/Spring 2016
The audience at the Miss America pageant had never seen anything quite like
it on the Atlantic City stage. Alayna Westcom '13 walked to a white-covered
tablecloth piled with beakers. Dressed in a tailored lab coat with protective
glasses, she orchestrated the first-ever science experiment in the talent
competition by combining potassium iodide, hydrogen peroxide and soap.
The result: an eye-catching eruption of foam and color known as "Elephant's
Toothpaste." Under the bright lights and an international television audience,
the impact of her talent was far greater. She showed young girls that science
is cool.
