In 2016, we saw an unprecedented number of cyber attacks in the United States
and abroad. Fake news emerged from newsstands at the grocery checkout
and went mainstream. And Yahoo admitted to a security breach in 2014 that
may have compromised over 500 million accounts. What will happen in 2017?
Our faculty experts in cybersecurity, data science, and communications and
information management give their predictions.
Meet the Experts / WHAT TO EXPECT IN 2017
f a c u l t y p r o f i l e
What do consumers have to be on the lookout for?
Ransomware attacks (a form of malware that locks users out of their
systems and requires an online payment to grant access to their
systems, or to get their data back.) will be on the rise. They are low-
budget and low stakes crimes. Cybercriminals will be targeting hotels,
small businesses, and personal computers. The IoT will make it easier.
What will be the game changer in 2017?
Advances in data science will mean behavioral and predictive analysis
will be a bigger factor in business decisions.
What is your big prediction?
We are going to see the first intentional cyberwar between two
countries. It won't be played out like we imagine, but will involve a
devastating action on services, such as knocking off a power grid or
impacting the water supply.
"We are going to see the first
intentional cyberwar between
two countries."
